Zeke and Lily: By Summer’s End

It’s late April. Zeke & Lily return for a summer they won’t see again for quite a few years to come.

In the past, they addressed the challenges thrown their way with a broader imagination of what life could hold if they didn’t chop it up along the way.  But this summer is different and as life continues to move forward, they suddenly find themselves with limited time and only a few pages left before this chapter of their lives ends and the next one begins.

Lily is now pregnant and their daughter will be born in the fall.  Until then, Lily’s chemo treatments will be halted and her health will be at risk.  But she’s determined to become a mother, even if it kills her.

From a doctor’s visit as well as from her own over-active mind, she decides to make a To-Do list of things she always wanted to do with Zeke before they became parents.

“So, are you ready for a story?” Zeke asked, sitting on the edge of the couch and looking down at Lily, dressed for bed and eager to be entertained by one of his silly imaginative tales.

Lily nodded, smiling sweetly behind her pacifier and sitting up on the couch, waiting patiently for her bedtime story like a good girl.

“Somewhere tucked between the dreams we remember and the dreams yet to come, there is a forest where dreams are kept until they are made,” he began, taking the blanket down from off the back of the sofa and spreading it out on the cushion.  “Dream elves run about this forest, keeping all the still-undreamt memories together.  But within this forest there is a sprite that connects every living creature to its dreams.  Her name is Lily.”

A loud and obnoxious clearing of the throat was heard, followed by laughter.  Lily opened her eyes at the sounds, lifting her head up and squinting at the flickering light from the television behind her as it reflected off the ceiling and walls.  She was still lying on Zeke’s chest on the floor in the middle of the living room.  Athos and Porthos had each snuggled along either side of his head, purring in unison into his ears.  Pretzel had nestled herself under his left arm and Aramis had curled up with Pretzel.  But where was little D’Artagnan?  And what time of night was it?  And who just cleared their throat?  And who was now laughing?

Lily’s To-Do List –

Zeke opened the passenger’s door and Lily got in, no sooner sitting down that being pounced upon by Pretzel.  The little pooch was fast asleep in the back seat and had suddenly startled awake, leaping into the front seat and greeting Lily as if they hadn’t seen one another all day.  In reality, the doctor’s appointment had only been about 15 minutes, but in a dog’s sense of time, 15 minutes was no different than 15 hours.  Lily never minded Pretzel’s overly-joyful reactions.  Remembering back to her dream with Mr. Woody a few months ago, she realized that it was instinct which made her so loving to animals.  With a dog and four kittens, she was surrounding herself with love … so she would never be alone.  With her pregnancy nearing the end of the first trimester, all seemed well, but as the obstetrician made clear, there was a lot going on inside her right now.  It just wouldn’t be visible to anyone but her for a little while yet.

Being Zeke & Lily –

Lily got up onto her knees on the passenger’s seat and leaned on the dashboard, nursing on her pacifier and smiling.  Spring had arrived once again and by mid-April, what this meant was:  the Amish were coming out of the woodwork and making lines of horse-n-buggies to drive around.  For Lily, this was a thrill to see as she made it her personal mission to wave at every single one of them.   But as they turned onto May Post Office Road, Zeke prepared for the slalom ride of the next 8 miles.

“Kettle, Daddy?” Lily mumbled behind her pacifier, waving at the first buggy as they passed it.

“You know, that’s a really good idea, Princess!”  Zeke said with playful excitement.  “We haven’t been there in a while, have we?”

She smiled more widely behind her pacifier, bouncing a bit with an excitement – equaling that in his voice.  Kettle meant a trip to the Kitchen Kettle Village in”Coursy” as Lily called it, or Intercourse, PA as it was known to everyone else.  It was collection of small stores either selling Amish-made goods or selling the Amish idea.  Unlike a lot of folks in Lancaster County, Lily hadn’t lost interest in the Amish quaintness.  And whereas, it was interesting to know that Intercourse, PA was named for the intersection of Routes 340 and 772 – not for the other meaning of the word, that Paradise, PA was named for the beauty of the land, that Blue Ball, PA and Bird-In-Hand, PA were named after taverns in those areas.  Lily enjoyed the history, but also the opportunity to make a joke out of the names:  You have to go through Intercourse to get to Paradise, but if you get lost along the way you’ll have to settle on Blue Ball or Bird-in-Hand.    

Euphoria

From a lost teddy bear search to the Big City to questions in bumper cars to the dreams she keeps, Lucy takes the world that has opened up to her and searches for the key to it all.

Sometimes the greatest search in life isn’t finding our happiness.  It’s knowing what to look for and more importantly, knowing why.

Mr. Woody, Neph, Aria, Lily, Zeke, Desiree and a few other friends join Lucy and Xavier in a journey of the mind and of the heart.  And where she winds up tells the tale of what has merely just begun.

Xavier trudged through some rather unpleasant garbage that had spoiled in the heat of the day.  Looking out across the horizon of garbage at the trash dump, he watched the sun beginning its descent of the evening.  Never in a million years would he have believed that on this day, he would be faced with the most daunting and impossible of tasks.  Yet here he was, ankle-deep and soon-to-be knee-deep in garbage as he searched for Patches, Lucy’s first teddy bear and the one she had since the day of her birth.

Earlier that week, Lucy’s mother accidentally threw the teddy bear away in the midst of trying to clean up the attic.  At this very moment, a rather distraught Lucy was being distracted by her mother with a day of shopping while Xavier and Lucy’s father desperately searched the trash dump for the teddy bear.

Zeke placed Lily next to her sister in the hospital bed.  And she lay there in the fetal position, nestled up against Taylor’s side.  He set Lily’s overnight bag at the foot of the bed and kissed them both good night before he left.

Lily never woke up in all the movement.  Maybe it was because of the dream she was in the middle of.

“The Ecstasy of a Fantasy Unknown”

Lucy lay comfortably on her back on the futon in the living room. Xavier had pulled it out and set it up as playpen, of sorts, for her. She was nestled on top of the softest blanket she had ever felt and surrounded with all the stuffed animals he had bought her in the past month. But she was more so nestled with her thoughts of this glorious Thursday morning.

Her work schedule and Xavier’s work schedule lined up perfectly to give them Thursdays and Fridays off. Both worked Saturdays and Sundays. So their “weekends” were always spent the two days prior.

She looked out at him in the kitchen while nibbling softly on her pacifier and remaining blissfully lost in the recent memories. Her hair was drying. Her body was bathed and smooth. She could smell the scent of the shampoo he used, the lotion on her skin and the powder from her diaper. The sunshine cascaded down on her frame and warmed her skin. She shifted slightly, pulling on the bottom hem of her Daddy’s green t-shirt – which served perfectly as a night shirt for her.

In a few short weeks, Lucy had gone from being incapable of dreaming to discovering the secrets of her heart. And as if fate had been directing her along each step of her life to arrive prepared at this moment, a return to innocence had beckoned her present and her future.

She had always been a hard-headed, no nonsense girl – having been groomed by her equally hard-headed father, Zeke, to take life by the reins and blaze her own path.

Yet now, suddenly she found herself softening from the inside and embracing the dreams she now visited each night. Much like her fragile yet often high-strung mother, Lily, Lucy had the ability to dream of places which harbored the desires of her heart. And from her dreams came the necessity to live her life fulfilled.

Lucy had embraced the littleness of being a BabyGirl. And through meeting Xavier, the Daddy/BabyGirl Dynamic was born into her reality with the ecstasy of a fantasy unknown.

She was in a state of happiness that intoxicated her senses. Closing her eyes, her tummy began to flutter with the tummyflies her Daddy had told her so much about. And her mind wandered back to the events of the mornings which brought her to where she was, just then:

The week was almost over and Lily couldn’t wait for it be done.  She had spent the past few days in a hospital receiving treatment for her condition.  The week was made easier by her roommate Annie, a girl who had the same condition as she.   

Lily awoke in the middle of the night.  A slight pain in her back had become a little bigger.  She sat up, letting her legs dangle over the side of the bed.  She turned and leaned her head to the left and then to the right, working out a kink.  Twisting her shoulders left and then right, she turned her torso, cracking her spine.

“Are ye done with all dat now,” a voice said in the darkness of the room.

Lily spun around, putting one leg back up on the bed and looking over at Annie who was fast asleep, illuminated by the light coming from the opened door to their room.  Then her eyes focused on the dark areas in the room.

“Zeke? Is that you?” she asked.

“No, no, no,” the voice replied as a tiny little elf walked from the shadows into the light.  “Unless, I’ve grown a wee bit recently an’ lost all me good looks.”

Hours later, Lily awoke quietly and sat up in the bed while rubbing her eyes. She looked around the room.  The television was the only light in the room and it strobed over everything in the cabin.  Softly in the background, she could hear snoring, but it wasn’t Zeke.  She leaned over top of him, and bent her ear down to his mouth.  All she heard was his breathing.  She sat up and touched her finger to her chin, pondering where the snoring was coming from. 

She slipped out of bed, using the flickers of the TV to waddle her way to the bathroom.  No one was there.  No one was anywhere in the room, just she and Zeke.  A frown formed on her face as she got frustrated. 

Then she saw the faint moonlight behind the curtains drawn in front of the windows.   So she waddled over to the windows and peered through the curtain.  Asleep on the ledge on the other side of the window was Mr. Woody.  She smiled and opened the window.  The sound of his lumber-sawing snoring filled her ears.  She giggled uncontrollably.

“Mr. Woody, Mr. Woody. Wake up,” she said while excitedly shaking him like a little girl.

Lily leaned out the window, and called into the backyard.

“Hello?”

“Hello,” a very sheepish voice said from behind a tree.

Out walked an elf, six inches high.  He stopped in the grass about three feet in front of her nursery window.

“Who are you?” Lily asked.

“I’m a woods elf.  Who are ye?” replied the elf, with the funniest little accent she had ever heard.

“I’m Lily.”

“Ye can’t be Lily,” said the elf as he walked a little closer to the window.

“Why not?” she asked while resting her chin on the window sill.

The Aria Series – Book One

This story takes place in “The CountrySide”, an alternate world which humans can only visit in their dreams.

Mr. Woody (from the “Zeke and Lily” series), the dream elf who appears in Lily’s dreams, teaches a class of young dream elflings, preparing them for the day they make their human connections and begin to appear in humans’ dreams.

A dream elf’s job is to connect with a human through dreams and guide that human through the most difficult times in their life.

Aria is a dream elf who has not discovered her human connection yet.  There is a lot of mystery surrounding her since she was born with braided red hair.  This is believed to mean she is special in some way from all the others.  But no one knows the meaning, not even her.

Along her journey, she learns who she is and falls in love with a dream elf named Neph.  From nights in the forest to dances with unicorns to diving for magic pearls in the great lake, she falls head-over-heels for Neph, learning so much about herself along the way.

When she finally discovers her human connection, she is immediately sent into his dreams to prevent a catastrophe from unfolding.

Join Mr. Woody, Aria, Neph, a whole community of dream elves and even the appearances of Zeke and Lily (through dream sequences) as this fairy tale shows that the key to knowing yourself is to believe in who you are all ready.
